Torrox has a rich past; from the first Phoenician settlements to the establishment of a Roman factory at the mouth of the river. The factory is believed to have been one of the triggers for its population growth; in those times the production of Garum was highly prized, which undoubtedly boosted the economic development of the area. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Visigoths managed to control the area for four centuries, until the arrival of the Muslims. It was during this period that the population grew and adapted; the culture of Torrox assimilated the new influences that we can see today in its whitewashed streets and houses, as well as in its culture and gastronomy. During this period Torrox became one of the main silk factories with its mulberry plantations and the cultivation of dried fruits for export. Torrox was conquered by the Christians in 1488.
